La juventud, la belleza, el orgullo, son algunas de las palabras que el joven fotógrafo finlandés repite y asocia con sus imágenes cuando habla de su trabajo.
Emplea términos como “jóvenes héroes” y ese tono casi épico hace que hasta la palabra “urbano” asociado a sus jóvenes nos parezca con resonancias guerreras, heroicas. Sin embargo estos jóvenes no son guerrilleros urbanos, son jóvenes de clase media, con ese grado de rebeldía que todos juzgan como propio del momento y de la edad. No hay en ellos nada más heroico que el enfrentarse a la adolescencia con las armas características de su edad: la belleza, el orgullo y la juventud.
Sus imágenes nos ofrecen fragmentos de fiestas urbanas, de grupos que se divierten, jóvenes que se encuentran en la disco, que se agrupan para beber, bailar, descubrir el sexo, fortalecidos por el grupo, protegidos detrás de las ropas, las lentillas de colores, el maquillaje, los disfraces más o menos grotescos. Y en esos encuentros urbanos, como sabemos todos los que vivimos rodeados de adolescentes y tenemos todavía ojos y memoria, no todo es alegría. Hay también descubrimientos dolorosos, peleas, soledades, ensoñaciones, deseos y frustraciones que se pretenden ocultar con una pelea, unas cicatrices, una sonrisa, unas copas o unos porros.
Tal vez las miradas de estos jóvenes sean lo más sincero de todo lo que nos ofrecen y es en esa mirada en la que hay que buscar su esencia, sus verdaderas personalidades. El fotógrafo presta una especial atención a estas miradas y al juego de relaciones, tanto mentales como físicas que se establecen con estas líneas cargadas de intenciones que unos trazan hacia los otros, hilos de unión que rebotan y acaban alcanzando al espectador.
Fotografías cercanas, personajes concretos, Lehtola centra la imagen en esos cuerpos y rostros que llenan toda la superficie de la fotografía, no hace referencias explícitas al lugar ni plantea ninguna narración. Juega con la idea de la espontaneidad en contraposición a la actitud de los modelos profesionales. Son simplemente jóvenes que hacen una pequeña parada en sus relaciones y juegos de miradas, ataques y seducciones, para mirar a la cámara, para mirarnos a todos nosotros y sobre todo para que nosotros les miremos, para que les veamos.

Youth, beauty and pride are some of the words that this young Finnish photographer likes to use and which he associates with his images when he talks about his work. He uses terms such as "young heroes", and this almost epic-like tone makes even the word "urban", when associated to its youth, seem to us to have an almost warlike, heroic resonance. These young people are not, however, urban guerrillas, they are the young middle class, with just that amount of rebellion which all judge to be appropriate to their age and time. There is nothing more heroic in them than the fact than the fact that the co confront adolescence with the weapons which are characteristic of their age: beauty, pride and youth.
Their images offer us fragments of urban parties, groups having a good time, young people meeting up with each other at the discotheque, getting together to drink, dance, discover sex; strengthened by the group, protected underneath their clothes, behind colored lenses, their make-up and their more or less grotesque disguises. And those urban meetings, as all of us who are surrounded by adolescents and still have eyes and a memory know, it’s not all fun. There are also painful discoveries, fights, loneliness, dream fantasies, desires and frustrations which attempt to conceal themselves behind a fight, a few scars, a smile, a few drinks or a few joints.
Perhaps the expressions of these young dwellers are the most sincere thing they offer us, and it is in there where one must look for their essence, their true characters. The photographer pays special attention to those expressions and the play of relationships, both mental and physical which are formed with those facial lines so full of intention they trace between each other, lines of abound which bounce back and finally reach the observer.
Photographs taken close up, specific characters, Lehtola centers his image on these bodies and faces which fill the whole surface of the photograph. He makes no explicit references of the place, nor does he propose any narration. He plays with the idea of spontaneity in contrast to the attitude of professional models. These are just young people who make a brief pause in their relationships and games of looks, attacks and seduction to look at the camera, to look at all of us, and particularly so that we look at them, so that we see them.
